How to Choose the Best Photo Location
One of the questions I get asked most before a session is, “Where should we take our photos?” And I honestly love this question. Northern Indiana has so many beautiful places for photos. Whether you’re planning engagement photos, family photos, senior photos, or updated portraits, there are so many good South Bend and Northern Indiana photo locations to choose from.
A few locations feel more dressed up and elegant. Others are perfect for kids who need space to move. You may want a place that feels meaningful because it’s tied to your story. Or maybe you just want a spot that’s pretty in every season.
This list includes some of my personal favorite photo locations near South Bend. I’m also including a few Northern Indiana photo locations I love recommending for families, couples, and seniors. After more than 10 years behind the camera, these are places I’ve photographed, visited, or would happily recommend depending on the feel you want for your session!

Garden and greenhouse locations are perfect if you want your photos to feel romantic, colorful, and full of natural texture. These spots are great for engagement photos, family photos, maternity photos, seniors, and anyone who loves greenery.

Best for: engagement photos, family photos, maternity photos, senior photos
Vibe: romantic, garden-inspired, colorful, and full of variety
Location: Wheatfield, Indiana in the Central time zone
Good to know: Guests are required to register online before visiting. Admission is $5, and professional photographers can pay $100 per session or $500 for a season pass. Hamstra Gardens is typically open seasonally beginning around April 1st, Wednesday-Thursday from 12pm-6pm and Friday-Saturday from 10am-7pm. They’re closed Sunday-Tuesday, and closing for the season is dependent on the weather.
Hamstra Gardens is a family-owned formal garden in Wheatfield, Indiana, with 6.5 acres of landscaping, architecture, and hidden spots throughout the property. There’s a pond, canoe, garden paths, and so many little tucked-away areas that make it feel different from a typical park session.
I love Hamstra Gardens for couples, families, and seniors because there’s so much variety in one place. It’s especially beautiful if you want your photos to feel romantic, polished, and a little more garden-inspired.
This is a great choice if you want your photos to feel romantic, garden-inspired, and a little different from a typical park setting. There’s plenty of variety, so we can move around and create a full gallery without everything looking the same.

Best for: engagement photos, proposals, family photos, maternity photos, senior photos
Vibe: lush, tropical, cozy, and greenhouse-inspired
Location: South Bend, Indiana
Good to know: Professional photo sessions need to be scheduled online ahead of time. A $30 fee applies, which covers the photographer’s admission and the permit to take photos. Regular admission policies apply for everyone else.
Potawatomi Conservatories is a beautiful indoor photo location in South Bend, especially if you want greenery without worrying as much about the weather. The conservatories have lush tropical plants, a Desert Dome, and peaceful indoor paths that make the space feel warm and full of texture.
I love this location for sessions that need something a little softer and more unique than a typical outdoor park. It can work beautifully for engagement photos, maternity photos, senior photos, or family photos, especially during colder months or rainy days.
They also make it easy to book your spot with their online booking calendar. Since it’s an indoor location with a photography policy, we’ll want to plan ahead and schedule your session before choosing this spot.

Beach and waterfront locations are perfect if you want your photos to feel relaxed and a little more playful. These spots are so pretty around golden hour when the light feels soft and dreamy.
Best for: engagement photos, family photos, maternity photos
Vibe: beachy, relaxed, playful, and scenic
Location: New Buffalo, Michigan (about 30 to 45 minutes from South Bend)
Good to know: Self-paid parking via kiosk enforced April 1 – October 31 from 8am-8pm. No pets allowed.
If you want beach photos near South Bend, New Buffalo Beach is one of my favorite options. It’s a small, touristy town with plenty of restaurants and shops. While it’s technically in Michigan and not a Northern Indiana photo location, it’s still close enough to South Bend to add to this growing list. In the summer it honestly feels like a second home for how often I’m out there.
There’s plenty of pretty spots here, including the beach, boardwalk, tall grass, lighthouse, big rocks, and open lake views. It’s especially beautiful around sunset, when the light gets soft and the water feels calm.
New Buffalo Beach works well for families because kids have space to move and play. It’s also a great option for engagement photos if you want something more romantic and laid-back.

Park and nature locations are some of my favorites for relaxed and movement-filled photos. They give families, couples, and seniors plenty of space to walk, explore, have fun, and settle into the session.
Best for: family photos, engagement photos, senior photos
Vibe: natural, outdoorsy, peaceful, and scenic
Location: North Liberty, Indiana, near South Bend
Good to know: Potato Creek State Park has a daily entrance fee for vehicles. In-state non-commercial vehicles are typically $7, and out-of-state non-commercial vehicles are typically $9.
Potato Creek State Park is one of the best Northern Indiana photo locations near South Bend if you want nature, lots of room, and a location that looks good in almost any season.
The park has hiking trails, biking trails, wooded areas, open fields, Worster Lake, fishing piers, and so many pretty spots throughout the property. It’s one of those places where we can walk around and find beautiful backdrops as we go.
For families, Potato Creek is great because it doesn’t feel too formal. Kids can move, explore, and be themselves, which usually leads to the best photos. For couples, it’s perfect if you want your engagement photos to feel relaxed and outdoorsy.

St. Patrick’s County Park is such a good option for South Bend family photos and engagement photos because it has a little bit of everything.
The park has wooded trails, ponds, grassy fields, covered bridges, river views, and frontage along the St. Joseph River. It feels peaceful and natural, but there’s still plenty of variety without needing to drive to multiple locations.
I especially love St. Pat’s Park for families because kids have room to move, explore, and settle into the session naturally. We can take a few classic portraits, then let everyone walk, play, snuggle, and interact.

Campus and architectural locations are great if you want classic, timeless photos. These spots work beautifully for engagement photos, seniors, dressier portraits, and meaningful sessions tied to a specific place.
Best for: engagement photos, dressier portraits
Vibe: elegant, classic, architectural, and romantic
Location: Downtown South Bend, Indiana
Good to know: Morris Performing Arts Center requires a $50 photography fee and needs to be scheduled during available business hours. Sessions can’t take place on event days, so this location takes more planning ahead.
If you want your photos to feel elegant and a little more dressed up, Morris Performing Arts Center is such a beautiful option.
Located in downtown South Bend, the Morris has grand architecture, indoor details, and a timeless feel that works really well for engagement photos. It’s a great fit for couples who love theater, historic buildings, or just want an excuse to wear something a little more formal.
This location has a totally different feel from a park or beach. It feels classic and romantic.

Best for: engagement photos, family photos, senior photos
Vibe: classic, meaningful, architectural, and scenic
Location: Notre Dame, Indiana (South Bend)
Good to know: Campus photography rules, parking, events, and busy weekends can vary, so planning ahead is helpful. If you want a more subtle session, we can also avoid the most recognizable campus icons.
Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College are two of the most beautiful campus locations for photos near South Bend. Both campuses offer stunning architecture, landscaping, walking paths, water views, and that classic Northern Indiana charm. Notre Dame has the lakes, beautiful buildings, and plenty of iconic spots. Saint Mary’s has a quieter, peaceful feel with a pond, pretty paths, and a softer campus setting.
These campuses are even more special for couples who met there, went to school there, got engaged there, or have a personal connection to the area.
A lot of people think Notre Dame photos have to revolve around the Golden Dome, but that’s not always the case. There are plenty of ways to photograph on campus while avoiding the most recognizable locations if you want something more subtle.

Seasonal locations are perfect when you want your photos to feel connected to a certain time of year. Orchards, tree farms, and other cozy spots can make your session feel more like an experience than something overly posed.
Best for: fall family photos, couples, candid sessions
Vibe: cozy, seasonal, playful, and relaxed
Location: Lehman’s Orchard is in Niles, Michigan, and Garwood Orchards is in LaPorte, Indiana
Good to know: Orchards are working farms and seasonal businesses, so we’ll want to check their current rules, hours, and photography policies before planning your session.
Apple orchards are such a fun option for fall family photos in Northern Indiana. They feel seasonal without being overly posed, which makes them especially great for families with younger kids.
Two orchard options to consider are Lehman’s Orchard in Niles, Michigan and Garwood Orchards in LaPorte, Indiana. Both can give you that cozy fall feeling while still keeping the session relaxed and natural.
I love orchard sessions because they naturally feel like an activity. Kids can walk through the rows, hold apples, explore, and interact with their family in a way that feels real. Orchards can also work beautifully for engagement photos if you want something casual, warm, and autumn-inspired.

Best for: family photos, holiday photos, couples, maternity photos
Vibe: cozy, seasonal, rustic, and family-friendly
Location: Wakarusa, Indiana, about 1.25 miles west of Wakarusa in Elkhart County
Good to know: Flickinger Farms is available for photography sessions year-round, but availability may be more limited during Christmas tree season. Professional photographers can reserve the farm for $25 per hour. Pets are allowed, but they need to stay on a leash during business hours.
Flickinger Farms is a family-owned Christmas tree farm just west of Wakarusa, Indiana. The farm has been owned by the Flickinger family since 1899, and the fifth generation added Christmas trees in 2014! It’s such a sweet spot for seasonal family traditions.
This is a beautiful location for holiday photos, especially if you want your session to feel cozy, nostalgic, and relaxed. The rows of trees give you that classic Christmas tree farm feeling, but the property can also be used year-round for photo sessions.
I love Flickinger Farms for families because it feels like more than just a photo location. It can feel like part of a tradition. During Christmas tree season, families can choose and cut their own tree, enjoy the farm atmosphere, and make a whole memory out of it.
Since it’s a working farm, we’ll want to be mindful of tree-cutting customers, parking, uneven ground, cut stumps, and farm rules while we’re there.

Some of the best photo locations are the places that already mean something to you. Your home, family property, backyard, farm, or lake house can make your session feel comfortable, personal, and true to your story.
Best for: family photos, engagement photos, lifestyle sessions, senior photos
Vibe: personal, meaningful, comfortable, and true to you
Location: Your home, family property, lake house, backyard, farm, or another private location you have permission to use
Good to know: Private property can be one of the easiest and most meaningful options, as long as you have permission to photograph there.
Sometimes the most special Northern Indiana photo locations aren’t public parks, gardens, or downtown spots. Sometimes, the best place for your session is somewhere personal to you!
This could be your family’s property, your backyard, your family farm, your grandparents’ home, a lake house, or any private property you have permission to use. If it’s a place where you feel comfortable, connected, at home, or most like yourself, it can be an amazing location for photos.
Personal property sessions can be so special for families. Kids are usually more relaxed in a familiar place, and the photos can hold so much meaning years later.
For engagement photos, personal property can also be really beautiful. Maybe it’s where you spend summer nights, where you got engaged, where your family gathers, or where your story feels rooted.
Not every photo location needs to be fancy. Sometimes the most meaningful backdrop is just at home.
